Papa Goose - English Bite

After a bit of wandering around yesterday with the epicurean emo, I found myself taking refuge from the cold and wind in Papa Goose on Flinders Lane. It has been about a year since I have indulged in "proper" English-inspired food and it is hard do better than one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney which specialises in this fare, Restaurant Arras, however keeping an open mind, I thought it would be appropriate to give it a go.

We were escorted to a table and it was not a problem that we did not have a booking. An order for sparking water was immediately placed and it wasn't long until the floor manager came over to discuss the dining options available for Sunday. He recommended the Sunday roast option, which he described as a true "feast" and to make things easy, we decided to try it out, which was $50/pp.

Beer arrived and then later a speciality bloody mary which followed the Sunday theme which Bono sang about so many decades ago. The ambiance is very smart. Wood floors, a good use of black, white and exposed industrial-like ceilings makes the restaurant very visually appealing. The kitchen worked efficiently and silently whilst the service remained professional and cheerful. There is a staircase that is enclosed by glass which takes you to the upper level where you will find the toilets but also another bar and lounge. It looked like a great place to enjoy a bottle and I will be seeking out the services of the bar on a future adventure on Flinders Lane.

When we were advised that the roast was a "feast" it was not a lie. There was a fair amount of lamb, sliced evenly. It was moist and succulent and served a perfect medium rare. There was little fat and it was truly a great cut. Along with gravy, you have large portions of potatoes, carrots, mushy peas, corn, a large leafy salad and a smaller tomato and onion salad.  I had been wanting a Sunday roast for some time, and unexpectedly I found it. I am looking forward to returning for dinner as given the quality of the roast and the efficiency and professionalism of service, I believe they may be able to give Restaurant Arras a run for their money.
